The number one cause of fence failure in Perthshire is undersized post foundations. Standard practice for many fencers is a 600mm hole with a single bag of postcrete. That's fine for sheltered urban gardens but inadequate for exposed Perthshire plots where the wind picks up speed across open fields. We install posts in 750–900mm holes with two bags of postcrete or proper concrete mix, depending on fence height and exposure.
The second most common cause is using soft, low-grade pressure-treated timber in ground contact. We use UC4-rated pressure-treated posts (the highest treatment classification for in-ground use) and concrete spurs on any post over 1.8m or in particularly exposed locations.
The third is wind-loading on solid panels. A close-board or solid lap fence at 1.8m has a huge wind-loading area. In exposed gardens we recommend hit-and-miss or slatted designs that let the wind through — significantly reducing the lateral load on posts during storms.
For boundary fencing in suburban Perth gardens (semi-detached, terraced and modern detached estates), traditional close-board fencing on 1.8m concrete posts is the gold standard. It's solid, secure, private and lasts 20+ years.
For budget-conscious boundary work, lap panel fencing on softwood posts is half the cost. Lifespan is typically 10–15 years rather than 20+, but for many gardens that's an acceptable trade-off.
For modern, contemporary gardens, horizontal slatted fencing is increasingly popular. It looks superb when paired with cedar or larch cladding on extensions, garden rooms and outbuildings — creating a coherent garden aesthetic.
