Drywall (plasterboard on stud or directly bonded) has effectively replaced traditional wet plaster on most modern construction in the UK. It's faster, cleaner, more thermally insulating, easier to run services through and easier to alter later. The plasterboard skim-coat finish you see on most walls is essentially a thin top coat of plaster over board — true wet plaster on solid walls is now mostly limited to listed buildings and specialist restoration.
Drywall is essential for any new internal wall (you can't build a stud wall in solid masonry), for fire separation in loft and garage conversions (FD30/FD60 fire-rated boards are mandatory), for acoustic separation between rooms (twin-stud and resilient-bar systems vastly outperform solid walls), and for thermal upgrade of existing walls (drylining with insulation can add 50–100mm of thermal to a cold external wall).
Where traditional wet plaster still makes sense is on small repair work to existing solid walls, on listed buildings, and on specialist projects where lime plaster is required for breathability.
Plasterboard isn't all the same. Standard (white) board is fine for most internal walls and ceilings in dry rooms. Moisture-resistant (green) board is required in bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms and any wall behind a tile splash. Fire-rated (pink) board provides 30 or 60 minutes of fire resistance and is mandatory in loft conversions and garage conversions to satisfy building regulations.
Acoustic boards are denser than standard board and significantly improve airborne sound resistance — essential for home offices, bedrooms in shared houses and any wall separating noisy from quiet rooms. Impact-resistant boards are tougher and used in high-traffic areas like hallways and family rooms with young children.
We recommend the right combination for each location at the quotation stage — there's no value in over-spec'ing every wall, but there's serious value in getting the spec right where it matters.
