Why Good Kitchen Design Matters More Than You Think

The work triangle is the most fundamental concept in kitchen design. It describes the relationship between your three most-used areas: the sink, the hob, and the fridge. The ideal layout keeps these three points in a triangle formation with no more than 6 metres total distance between them.
Why does this matter? Because you move between these three points hundreds of times every day. A poorly laid out kitchen means unnecessary walking, awkward reaching, and constant frustration. A good work triangle means everything flows naturally.
If your kitchen layout doesn't allow a traditional triangle — for example in a galley kitchen — focus on keeping the sink and hob close together, as these are the two points used most during cooking.
2. Maximise Natural Light
Natural light is the single most impactful element in any kitchen. A dark kitchen feels small, cold, and unwelcoming. A bright kitchen feels spacious, clean, and energising.

Even smaller changes make a difference: replacing a solid back door with a glazed one, adding a window above the sink, or choosing reflective splashback materials that bounce light around the room.
3. Invest in Quality Worktops
Your worktop is the surface you interact with most in the kitchen. It's where you prepare food, put down hot pans, spill coffee, and lean while chatting to guests. The right material makes a huge difference to both appearance and practicality.
Quartz is our most recommended option. It's virtually indestructible, heat-resistant, stain-proof, and never needs sealing. It comes in hundreds of colours and patterns, including stunning marble-effect options that look luxurious but require none of the maintenance.
Solid surface options like Corian offer seamless joins and integrated sinks — perfect for a sleek, modern look.
Laminate has come a long way. Modern laminate worktops look incredibly realistic and cost a fraction of stone. If budget is a priority, this is where to save — a good-quality laminate with a professional edge finish can look excellent.
4. Don't Underestimate Storage
One of the most common regrets we hear from homeowners is "I wish I'd added more storage." Kitchens accumulate stuff — appliances, crockery, food, cleaning supplies, cookbooks. Good storage design means everything has a home and your worktops stay clear.

- Pull-out larder units — full-height, narrow pull-outs that give you instant visibility of everything stored
- Deep pan drawers — far more practical than cupboards for pots, pans, and baking trays
- Corner carousel units — make use of otherwise dead corner space

5. Consider an Island or Peninsula
If your space allows, a kitchen island is one of the most desirable features in modern kitchen design. It adds:
- Extra worktop space for prep and serving
- Additional storage underneath
- Casual dining with breakfast bar seating
- A social focal point — you can cook while facing your guests
Don't have room for a full island? A peninsula (attached to a wall or existing units) offers many of the same benefits in a smaller footprint. Even a compact 1200mm peninsula can transform a galley kitchen.

6. Plan Your Lighting in Three Layers
Lighting is one of the cheapest upgrades available but has an enormous impact on how your kitchen looks and feels. We recommend three layers:

Ceiling downlights or a flush-mount fitting for general illumination. LED panels are energy-efficient and provide even, shadow-free light.
Task Lighting
Under-cabinet LED strips illuminate your worktops where you actually chop, measure, and read recipes. These are inexpensive to install and make a dramatic difference — especially in the evening.
Accent/Feature Lighting
Pendant lights over an island or dining table add personality and warmth. These are your statement pieces — choose something that reflects your style, whether that's industrial, contemporary, or classic.
Consider dimmable circuits too. Full brightness for cooking; softer light for dining and entertaining.
7. Never Compromise on Installation Quality
This is the tip that matters most. You can choose the most expensive units, the most stunning worktops, and the most stylish fixtures — but if the installation is poor, the entire kitchen will look and feel cheap.
The hallmarks of bad installation are everywhere: gaps between units, uneven worktops, doors that don't align, drawers that stick, silicone that's messy, and tiles that aren't level. These aren't just cosmetic problems — they lead to water damage, premature wear, and costly repairs.
